Homeschool Ideas & Tips eZine - Spring 2006

*** Hello from Charmaine ***

Dearest Reader,
First of all, let me wish you an early Happy Mother's Day.
If anyone deserves accolades on Mother's Day, it's
homeschooling moms!

This is the time of year when many of us are planning for
next year's curriculum by attending homeschool conferences,
reading catalogs or just hoping someone will tell us what
to do. This can be either really fun, or really frustrating
but, either way, having a good sense of humor helps. I've
asked my friend, Kristi Scorcio, to write this edition's
Ideas & Tips article about this very thing. She's a
V.H.M.(Veteran Homeschool Mom)with a great sense of humor
and a lot of wisdom (earned the hard way). I believe her
article will make you smile, but it will also make you
think. Enjoy!

Blessings on your day,
Charmaine

The Perfect Homeschool Year
by Kristi Scorcio

Next year we'll do it right. Home schooling, that is!
I'll have purchased the “best'”curriculum. Not only will I
have purchased the best curriculum, I'll have read every
word of the teachers' manuals and I'll use them correctly.
I'll have planned an “orderly but flexible” schedule that
allows for all the surprises in life while still
accomplishing all of my home school goals. Correction,
“our” home school goals. I'll include my children in
planning our next school year, choosing those things that
they are interested in pursuing. We will set goals
together. Manageable but challenging goals. We will
always use our answering machine to screen calls so that I
never get into a long phone conversation when I should be
reading aloud. All our pencils will remain sharp.
Hey, I can dream, can't I?

So I drag out my pile of home school catalogs, a fresh
stack of white paper, find my favorite blue pen and begin
to plan for the start of our school year in September.
I soon see that some of the big changes I want to make
aren't really necessary. It may be that a few small
changes made in specific areas will yield big results.
Perhaps it's not the weekly assignment sheets that are the
hassle. Maybe switching to pencil when I fill out the
sheets will give me the flexibility I crave.

Other aspects of our school may need sweeping changes.
Maybe the language arts program I've been using seems to be
working, but I feel like trying something new. I realize
that I am a better teacher when I'm excited about what we
are learning together. I really enjoyed using a certain
writing program, but after using it for 8 years, I really
enjoyed selling it and buying a new program that is
refreshingly different.

I feel a sense of accomplishment when I look back over our
14 years of home schooling. I feel nervous when I look
ahead too far down the road, so I try to limit my planning
to one year at a time, without trying to solve the many
concerns beyond that.

I write lists filled with ideas and plans. I highlight,
cross out, rewrite and organize. I add up the prices and
crumble up paper and organize some more. Finally our
budget, our goals and our expectations come together.

Now I will be able to pack away this year's work knowing
that next year we may not have the perfect home school...
but just wait until the year after that!

*** Testimonial ***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Charmaine is amazing! I came to her with a boggled mind
about curriculum choices and she gently guided me by asking
the right questions to help me see what would work best for
me, as the teacher, and my children as the students. What a
difference it makes to have the kind of help Charmaine
offers.
to the following questions:
How did God make mothers?
1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.
2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.
3. God made my Mom just the same like he made me. He Just
used bigger parts.
What ingredients are mothers made of?
1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and
everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.
2. They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they
mostly use string, I think.
Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom?
1. We're related.
2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's
moms like me.
What kind of little girl was your mom?
1. My mom has always been my mom and none of that other
stuff.
2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would
be pretty bossy.
3. They say she used to be nice.
Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom?
1. We're related.
2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's
moms like me.
