*** Hello from Charmaine ***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dearest Reader,
My son’s homeschool graduation party (and combination 18th
birthday & 4th of July party) was a great success! We had
over 200 people attend and we were all very blessed by the
gorgeous weather and grand turnout. Thanks to all of you
who sent your congratulations.
I promised you an article this month about making the most
of the summer. Well, even though summer is half over, I
trust the ideas in the article will help you make the best
of what’s left of this summer. So read on - I think you
will be surprised by the content of the article.
Blessings on your day,
Charmaine
*** Ideas ***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would guess that you’re thinking an article titled “ Make
the Most of the Summer” is going to give you fun ideas for
outdoor projects or vacation tips. Well, not this “Make the
Most of the Summer” article! What I want to share with you
is a simple but effective way to use these last few weeks
of summer to instill (or shore up) discipline, honor and
respect in your children. If you work on this now (when
most of you are in a relaxed schooling mode) you’ll be
ahead of the game when you begin schooling full-force in
the fall.

How do your children reply when you give them a command or
ask them to do something? Do you have a set reply that
shows that they have heard you and that they will gladly
obey? In our home, we require our children to answer:
“Yes, Mom” (or Dad) or “Ok, Mom” (or Dad) when we ask or
tell them to do something. That is the required response
at all times. However, if they give the required response
(with a good attitude) then they have the privilege of
adding to that response - “But can I ask you something
about that?”. Sometimes our answer is “Sure. What would
you like to ask?” But sometimes our answer is “No, you may
not - you just need to obey.” It just depends on the
circumstances. Having this rule in place eliminates the
whining and arguing. It also helps the child be mentally
prepared to carry through with what you’ve asked them to do
because they have given a positive response.

Use these last few weeks of summer to help your children
get into the habit of a positive response each time they
are asked or told to do something. When it comes time to
hit the books in earnest, you will be very glad you did!

*** Tips ***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whenever you are going to change the rules on how you want
your children to behave, be sure that you sit them down and
explain to them, in detail, what you now expect. Have them
repeat back to you what the new rule is and what the
consequences or the rewards will be for disobeying or
obeying. It’s also very helpful to role play a situation
that requires them to practice the new behavior. Make the
role play fun - have some laughs while you’re practicing -
but also make sure that they understand fully that from now
on they will be expected to obey the new rule.
