Homeschool Ideas & Tips Newsletter August, 2004

*** Hello from Charmaine ***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dearest Reader,
In my last newsletter, I promised you an article for this
month titled Building a House - Raising Children. My dear
friend, Kristi Scorcio, has written an article that I’ve
chosen to use instead. I’m confident that you are
absolutely going to love it. It’s the perfect article to
help everyone get back to school with grace and ease and
truly realistic expectations.
Speaking of getting back to school, how are your plans
coming along? If you could use a little help (or a lot of
help!) see the “What’s New with Victory Coaching” section
of this newsletter.
Blessings on your day,
Charmaine
Let the School Year Begin...
By Kristi Scorcio
I love home schooling. I love it. I mean it, I really love
it. It's so satisfying to sit in our own home, round the
roaring fire, watching my children eagerly soak up
knowledge as I read aloud from a "living book". Well, okay.
They don't always soak up knowledge. We rarely build a fire
during the school day and to be perfectly honest, I don't
always "love" home schooling.
Especially on those first days of school each fall. I'm one
of those moms that pores over home school catalogs starting
in January - reviewing curriculum after curriculum,
comparing reviews, calling companies with questions,
calling friends that have used the curriculum I am
considering purchasing, purchasing items, checking them out
and sending them back if they don't meet my expectations.
By June, I have checked my lists many more times than twice
and made my purchases. All summer long I smile when I think
of how great our coming school year is going to be.
Obviously, I begin our school year with high hopes. By noon
the first day of our new school year, I can't remember
where I got the stupid idea to home school. The kids don't
"ooh and ahhh" about the beautiful, well organized
curriculum. They don't thank me for the wonderful new
handwriting program. They wonder if they really have to do
a whole page of handwriting and happen to mention that this
science is like the science they had last year... and they
didn't like THAT science.
Soon, I'm on the verge of tears. Didn't this scene play out
last year too? The collision of reality and dreams is not
always pretty. So what's a home school mom to do?
1. Remember that we all have days like this. Starting a new
school year can be a difficult time. Consider starting out
the year with a few half-days of classes. For example:
Forget about starting on Monday. Start on Wednesday and
have three half days before you tackle a full week of
school.
2. Try to have realistic expectations. Seriously, did you
ever clap your hands over a new health book when you were
in school? Never allow disrespectful behavior but remember
we are home schooling real children who probably are more
prone to choose games over handwriting any day.
This does not make your children bad. Just human.
3. Allow your children to have input in scheduling. You
like to tackle math first each day, BUT maybe your little
third grader would like it if math came after science.
There's no right or wrong way to schedule classes. Listen
to their ideas and incorporate what you can.
4. Expect the first few days to be filled with changed
plans, adjustments and even a few gaps (or gasps). Try to
find humor in it all. We are real people home schooling
real children in a real world. There will be mistakes,
misunderstandings and misplaced books.
As I prepare to start our 13th year of home schooling, I
resolve to write our schedule in pencil, to expect that the
kids won't remember every math fact from last spring, and
along about noon the first day of classes, to look around
the table at my children and thank God for the start of
another year together.
Kristi Scorcio and her husband live in north central
Wisconsin and have three teenage sons and a 9 year old
daughter.
*** Funny of the Month ***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nancy's nephew was 4 when she was pregnant with her first
baby. She allowed him to place his hand on her belly and
feel the baby kick.
His little face scrunched and he said, "How does the baby
get out of there?"
She wanted to keep it simple so she said, "The doctor will
help."
His eyes widened in amazement as he exclaimed, "You've got
a doctor in there, too?"
